REMADE Releases New Circular Economy Workforce Development Roadmap & Funding Opportunity

EWD project proposals are requested for projects that align with the EWD Roadmap and are seeking to develop short courses that can be used to educate, train, and develop the incumbent workforce for careers in the circular economy.

Short courses can be taken individually and are stacked together with other relevant short courses to form a Tiered Certificate Pathway. Each individual short course and Tiered Certificate Pathway addresses one of three distinct competency levels:

  • Awareness level training is intended to provide participants from a broad audience a high-level introduction to the subject matter. Individual Awareness level short courses may last 1- 2 hours.

  • Practitioner level training is intended for incumbent workers that currently work with Re-X technologies or in adjacent technology domains who wish to broaden their knowledge. Individual Practitioner level short courses may last 4-8 hours.

  • Expert level training is intended to provide in-depth coverage of advanced Re-X concepts or technology and is targeted toward engineers or scientists trying to deepen their expertise. Individual Expert level short courses may last 1-2 days.

Join REMADE at the Upcoming Webinar: Dynamic Systems Analysis of PET and Olefin Polymers in a Circular Economy: Project Update

March 6, 2023 | 12:00-1:00pm

This webinar will provide an update on progress made after the first year of the project. The goal of this R&D project is to conduct a systems analysis of a circular economy of PET and olefin plastics (HDPE/LDPE-LLDPE/PP) with a U.S. scope and with a Michigan case study. In doing this, the project team will apply the conceptual modeling framework developed earlier in a REMADE exploratory project.

The project team will predict energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for a circular economy of plastics and compare results to the current baseline linear economy.

The team has convened and engaged with experts from the plastics supply chain in an advisory board for the project. The baseline linear economy for PET and olefin plastics in the U.S., representing over 70% of plastics flows, was completed and showed that the system emitted 1.5% of annual U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2019, contributed 5.1% to U.S. industry emissions, and accounted for 3.1% of U.S. energy consumption. Emissions and energy demand are mostly from virgin resin production, and secondly from semi-manufacturing processes such as extrusion, injection stretch blow molding, and blow molding.

Only 7% of the end-of-life waste PET and olefin plastics were collected for recycling, and PET was the resin with the highest recycle rate of 19%. As the project enters its second and final year, this webinar will highlight progress toward the final deliverable: a systems analysis of a future circular economy for plastics in the U.S. and the state of Michigan.

REMADE Announces Call for Papers!

Bringing together, for the first time, all aspects of the Circular Economy into one unified, in-depth, multidisciplinary, action-based scientific conference

The REMADE Institute, in partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, will host the first REMADE Circular Economy Technology Summit & Conference in Washington, D.C. The conference will take place on Monday and Tuesday, March 20-21, 2023, at the National Academy of Sciences Building, 2101 Constitution Ave., N.W., in the nation's capital. This conference will serve as a national thought-leadership event on the Circular Economy.

The objective of the REMADE Circular Economy Technology Summit & Conference is to advance the national conversation on a circular approach and how sustainable manufacturing can support the nation in meeting its multiple energy, environmental and economic goals.

The conference will be open to REMADE members and non-members alike. It will feature experts highlighting emerging technologies and research that will advance and accelerate the nation’s transition to a Circular Economy. REMADE’S annual Tech Summit, which is exclusive to members only, will take place on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at a separate venue.

REMADE is excited about bringing all aspects of the Circular Economy together in one unified conference. To that end, REMADE is issuing a Call for Papers. Submissions from academic researchers, industry innovators, and others, including international experts, are strongly encouraged. Papers will be peer-reviewed and published in the conference proceedings, which will be available after the event.

For more detailed information on the REMADE Circular Economy Tech Summit & Conference, as well as the conference Call for Papers, which includes a list of topics and an anticipated schedule and deadlines, go to General Conference Info — The REMADE Institute.

Abstracts are due Wednesday, Nov. 16! We look forward to reviewing your submission.
